Gibbs Bldg, 1912

The corner of Houston and Alamo Streets marked the northwest wall of the old Alamo compound. Samuel Maverick, signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence, built a two-story house on this site in 1850. During excavation of the Gibbs Building basement, cannons were unearthed and are now on display at the Alamo and at the western entrance of La Villita. Notice the “G” for Gibbs on the cartouches below the roofline.
The Maverick family developed much of Alamo Plaza and Houston Street in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Looking west on Houston Street you will see the ornate restored facade of the Albert Maverick Building, ca. 1882, the oldest building on Houston Street.
