Smith House

Sam Smith, known as “El Barbon” (the bearded one), served as an early alderman and mayor of San Antonio. He purchased this house in 1857 from John Riddle, who is believed to have built it in the early 1840s. The house is an outstanding example of what is known as an “Irish flat,” with its graceful roofline, stuccoed caliche block walls, and paneled casement doors. Delta East/West, an East Indian tea house, occupied the Smith House during HemisFair.
