Institute of Texan Cultures

The State of Texas built this Brutalist structure to house the Texas Pavilion for HemisFair ’68. A large earthen berm previously surrounded the limestone aggregate concrete building on all sides, but the western portion was demolished in the 1990s to improve the connection to HemisFair Plaza. The form of the ITC reflects the mid-century modern design popular at the time of its construction, featuring sculptural massing and constructivist minimalism.
