Acequia Madre

One in a network of ditches begun by the Spanish and their Native American charges at the founding of San Antonio in 1718. This hand-dug ditch, lined with limestone, diverted water from the San Antonio River a little north of the present-day Witte Museum on Broadway, down through fields belonging to San Antonio de Valero Mission. Irrigation was the key to the growth of mission and town. The acequia fed back into the river south of downtown near Guenther Street. Most of the acequias were filled in by 1913. This section was restored in 1968.
